In this week’s episode of Conversation On Tap, Joel and Jose pour themselves some delicious coffee, care of Keurig’s k-cups. We struggled to get our schedules aligned, so we ended up meeting early on a Saturday morning. For our FRED Talks, Joel dived into the similarity between the languages in Hawaii and Madagascar (with a shoutout to the Disney movie Moana), while Jose talked about the “Thoughts and Prayers” controversy, particularly after Kevin Smith's heart attack and all the empty Tweets following mass shootings. Once we got over the pleasantries, we tackled the issue of race. Joel and Jose shared their racial and ethnic backgrounds, but the bulk of our conversation centered on the racist dog whistle Trump blows, beginning with the birther controversy to his campaign and through to the “fine people” comments after the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. The conversation also touched on the reality of white privilege, then hopped over to the controversy of cultural appropriation and how it has now embroiled Bruno Mars. As we closed the show, Joel talked about a band he's into called Snarky Puppy, while Jose talked about how great Black Panther was and how it shared a theme with Coco. We hope you enjoy the episode! And we hope that you will join us next week! Salut!
